Has someone tested Kaspersky AV 6?

What are your experiences of KAV new version 6 (still in beta)? Mainly
is it a resource hog like 5? Detection is certainly very good, but how
is it in everyday use?

Have you tried it? After the initial "learning" period, I didn't know
it was there. No problems here on my 1.6 ghz AMD cpu PC with 256 meg
RAM. I think they have a winner.

Hi Art, I guessed you have tried it :) I have not yet. I purchased
Nod32 just because it is so light in my oooold 900mz machine. And it
did pick heuristically a couple of years ago a virus (can't remember
the which one of the really big infectors it was maybe Netsky) from a
mail message hours before others including Kaspersky got updates out.
And that was very convincing. Kaspersky is very good with it's
extended defs and can find anything already known from everywhere.

I think I must try v.6 myself too.

It's a powerful AV solution incorporating the execllent signature
database from kaspersky labs as well as brand new proactive methods of
antivirus including but not limited to behaviour blocking and
real-time rootkit detection. Kaspersky Lab have also added powerful
self protection which prevents malware from tampering with or
terminating the software. The Internet Security version also includes
Antispam and a Firewall.

I tried it on my Celeron (750MHz, 512MB RAM), and it ran like the
wind, once I got over a few initial hurtles. Had to re-install the
program because of some features that wouldn't work right. The Beta
forum was very helpful. Really looking forward to it being released,
especially as KAV 5 slows that system to a crawl during startup,
thanks to kavsvc.exe hogging the CPU for the first 10 minutes.

Tested and appreciated here. It has some excellent features, certainly one
of the most reliable detection rates, and is reasonably paced an scan speed
too. Once its installed and configured to suit your needs its just a case of
sit back and let it do its thing. As for resource hogging, nope not that I
can see, msn messenger uses more resources and cpu time when idle than
Kasper does. My opinion is that I will be recommending this product without
any hesitation.

One of the best moves on the part of KL, IMO, is getting rid of the
distinction between KAV Personal and Personal Pro. If you buy KAV (a
subscription), you can customize KAV the way that you want. Always a
fight between the marketing (KISS) and engineering departments ...
been there, done that.

Yes - right click and select suspend protection and you can even set how
long to stop protection for!!

How's their Firewall component? Not too much strain on the system?

Works just fine. The IDS detects known attacks so theoretically it can
detect network attacks say before an organisation has time to deploy
patches either due to slack administration or validation. I will not
be using the Internet Security version though. I'm using an
alternative solution for a firewall and my spam is handled by my ISP.
The Antivirus product will work just perfect! :)

Yes :) Right clicking the systray icon does this.

lol. Why?

I assumed this was a troll for grammar trolls. Anyone correcting him
with a "it should be rectal thermometers" would get called "anal". :))

Larry, disable scan at startup to rectify this.

Thanks, Ian. When KAV 6 Beta expires in another 11 days or so, I'll do
that if the final release is not out by then.

Cheers,

I forgot to mention in my earlier reply, that KAV 6 Beta does not
screw up Active Sync like KAV 5 does. The fix, when running KAV 5, was
to disable network protection; otherwise the system would reboot when
syncing my Axim X51V PDA. No PDA sync problems at all with KAV 6 Beta.
