...Has Encountered a Problem and Has to Close

C

C.

Hoping folks here can assist with a perplexing problem.

I'm running Windows XP Pro which has been kept up to date with all of
Microsoft's update releases.

A few weeks ago I began OCCASIONALLY getting the message "Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem and has to close". Since then the
problem has grown, occurs multiple times during the day AND has begun to
occur with a variety of applications, including Outlook (MS Office 2003),
Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11, Word (MS OFFICE 2003),
Window Explorer, plus a couple of other of non-MS applications.

When I click on the link to view the report information that will be sent
to Microsoft if I choose to report the problem, I see a variety of
modules indicated for the different instances:

Internet Explorer: mshtml.dll,flash9B.ocx, unknown
Windows Media Player: wmp.dll, l3codeca.acm
Windows Explorer: dbshell.dll
Outlook: no module listed
Word: no module listed

Here's what I've done:

Virus Scan - McAfee

Spyware screen: Spybot, Ad-Aware-SE

Internet Explorer: disabled all browser helper objects except those from
Microsoft

I've looked at the Dr. Watson log and it seems to contain the same
information that would be in the report to Microsoft.

If anyone here has clue about how I can go about getting to the bottom of
this issue, I would be most appreciative.

Oh, BTW, if I'm posting this to the wrong forum, I would appreciate
someone pointing me to the correct one.

Thx.,
C.

I believe you are infected with Trojans.linkoptimizer , so scan for Viruses
from the links below to get another opinion on how clean your computer.
Run a scan from here online:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
Download Avast Cleaner from here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html
Lots of tools to download and disinfect your machine:
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Downloads/browseFreeRemovalTool/

Then Download the Hijackthis and send the report to one of many
forums for analysis and troubleshooting:
When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. Post
your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7, or other appropriate
forums for expert analysis, not here.

= You can uninstall and reinstall the Flash Player from here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

= For the Mshtml.dll: Open a run command and register these DLLs:
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 occache.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 iepeers.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 wininet.dll
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 webcheck.dll
regsvr32 mobsync.dll
regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx
regsvr32 mhtml.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll

You can Copy and paste this text in a notepad and save on your Desktop as
reg.bat and then open a run command and type in: C:\reg.bat click [OK] and
click Yes.

Something simillar to this happened to me when I installed a new DVD writer
and its software Nero Express bundled with Power DVD, Power Producer Gold, In
CD and Adobe Acrobat. Then I started receiving the error message and the
program would just close. When I tried to uninstall Power Producer Gold via
Start > All Program and all its shared files everything went fine.

If you recently installed hardwares with corresponding softwares uninstall
them one at a time and see what happens.

Thx for the suggestions: Based on them, I've done the following:

* Additional Virus Scan with CA-AntiVirus (nothing found)
* Ran HijackThis and posted the log at Castle Cops
* Uninstalled/Re-installed Adobe Flash Player
* Ran the Bat file as you indicated, however several of the items were
unsuccessful:
- winet.dll Error message - DllRegisterServer entry point not found
(this dll does not exist on my system)
- webcheck.dll Error message - DllRegisterServer entry point not found
- mshtml.dll Error message - DllRegisterServer entry point not found
- mhtml.dll Error Message - the specified module could not be found
(this dll does not exist on my system)
- msjava.dll Error Message - the specified module could not be found
(this dll does not exist on my system)

The problem continues!

Hi C,
I did have a look into your log and you have some stuff there, but why you
are running two Anti-Virus programs or you did install one recently?.
I will not analysis the log here as not allowed or advised and better to
follow the Castle cops Experts.
Yes, some of this DLLs will give you an error as some not for IE7 (for IE6),
I did revise the DLLs.
Good luck.
