Harry Potter (Prisoner of Azkaban) re-boots my machine

David Macaskill

Hi, I just bought and installed this Harry Potter game and every time
we try to run it my machine re-boots. I doubt it's the video card - it
new (128MB). Any ideas? Thanks in advance (it's for my kids!)

Your system is most likely restarting as a result of a STOP error.

To stop this behavior go to Control Panel / System / Advanced /
Click the Startup and Recovery Settings button / Uncheck the box
labelled "Automatically restart" under the System Failure section.

To analyze the error, try the steps in: http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

If the error indicates a file name that begins with ati, or nv (nVidia)
the most likely solution would be to install the latest drivers using
the instructions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers

follow-up - I'm wondering if its an IRQ problem? I had a look at setup
and I noticed a couple of the IRQs are doubled up. I say this because
I've upgraded the video card (for example) after installing XP. I
wonder if that screwed things up? I've also read on line here (I
think) that some people have managed to shake out this problem by
flattening their HD and re-installing XP (something I would like to
avoid).

So - I'm going to twiddle with my IRQs - If anyone wants to provide
some advice along the way I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance. DEM

Hi David,

IRQ conflicts are eliminated with Windows XP. :)
Have you tried the advice I posted for you earlier?

Actually your message wasn't showing when I posted my follow-up, so I
twiddled a bit, things still weren't right, so I flattened my
harddrive, re-installed XP and then re-installed the game and now it
works fine. Thanks for the advice though, I'm sure it will come in
handy in the future.

I'm glad it ended well for you David. Sometimes the
old 'Nuke and Pave' is well worth the effort. :)

Thanks for posting!
Jimmy.

"Flattening a hard drive" - not heard that one! Does it mean reformatting?

Hi Mike,

Yes. Nuke and Pave means the same as well. :)
