Hardware recognized but won't work

I have a problem that started out with just my USB connected camera and has
expanded to several other hardware components. Win XP will recognize A:, D:
(cd-rom), E: (cd-r/rw), Kodak EasyShare Dock, and G: SD card reader. HOWEVER,
If you try to access or play any device from this hardware it says Drive is
inaccessible, OR as in the case of the cd's it just spins and does nothing.

The one wrinkle is that 1. the cd-r/rw will read and BURN cds but it will
not PLAY cds. 2. The USB connected mouse works fine, the usb connected HP
Scanner works fine.

I have updated to Win XP SP2 with no changes. The problem began several
months ago when the computer stopped reading from the camera dock.

Any suggestions would be helpful. As a last resort I will rebuild the system
but would prefer not to do that.

Start/run, type DEVMGMT.MSC , then rightclick each USB Hub device,
Properties, uncheck the box on the Power Management tab.

Re-letter your optical drives...R for any ROMz...W for any writers.

The ancillary peripherals are confusing your system...by changing
letters on you.

Have a nice one...
