Hardware Problem

Hello

I have a question, I have an XP SP2 computer. It has a MSI motherboard
and a WD 36 GB Raptor SATA disk as a main drive. I also have a Maxotr
80 gb IDE disk.

I had some Windows problems so I formatted the computer. Before doing
it, I took out the Maxtor disk because that has only information, so I
just wanted to protect it.

I installed Win XP SP2 succesfully, installed all my program, AV..
Everything was working fine. I shut down the PC, put in the Maxtor
disk, restarted the computer and it didnt go past the black screen with
the Windows logo. If I take out that disk it works. The maxtor disk has
only information, and I have never installed an OS in it.

Does anybody has an idea about what could be the problem here?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

Its generally better to just unplug the data cable and power cable from it.

You must have physically damaged something, that should have worked fine.

Try a new ribbon cable, it may have got damaged if you pulled it out
of the connector on the maxtor carelessly by yanking on the ribbon.

Rod - any chance he needs to re-install IDE mobo drivers (not that you
usually need to but??)

Yeah, but there are clearly different drivers for the
two drives since one is SATA and the other IDE.

I wouldnt expect that particular set of symptoms tho, I'd
expect to just not see the maxtor if that was the problem.

If a new cable doesnt fix it, it would be worth repairing the install after
booting from the distribution CD. That wont lose any data or the install.

I still havent found the problems. Switched cables, both SATA and IDE.
Now Im running Western Digital and Maxtor diagnostic tools on both
discs to rule out physical damege.

Thanks for your help,

OK, worth repairing the install from the XP CD
booted if the diags claim the drives are fine.

Hi I just found out that a platic guide on the Sata cable is broken,
although no pins look damaged, I think this can make the cable loose.

I just took the disk to warranty to see if I can get it replaced(dont
think so, but its worth the try ;) )

THanks again for your help,
Dan

No Ron, both are IDE drives. If they are chipset sata/pata ports, the drivers
are identical.

Yeah, quite a bit of evidence that its significantly under designed.

Yeah, I'd monster them on that if it was mine.

No problem, thanks for the feedback, not done often enough IMO.

Thanks for that completely superfluous
proof that you've never ever had a clue.

It was worth the try..
At the warranty place they showed me that the manufacteres warranty
(WD) doenst cover it.
I guess I have to buy a new disk. What pisses me off more is that this
was supposed to be an Enterprise Edition, "Hard Duty" disk, and after 1
year of use, some ridiculously important piece brakes, and its not
cover by the warranty...

I wouldnt let them get away with that myself.

But then my country has much more aggressive
consumer protection laws than some.

Yeah, I avoid WD drives myself, and their obvious
weaselling on warranty is just one of the reasons for that.

Yeah, that was my last WD drive. Just bought a Seagate 120 GB SATA
disk. Hope everything turns out all right...
