Hardware Malfunction

I expect several messages telling me how stupid my question is but here
goes.

In the last few weeks I've received the following message 3-4 times:

Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
The system has halted

Obviously there's an intermittent problem. How do I go about tracking it
down?
I turn the computer off, turn it back on and everything is fine for days.

Any suggestions most welcome.

Hi Ted
Next time it happens, right click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and
choose Properties. Select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager
button.
See if you have any yellow or red icons (exclamation or X) next to any of
the devices.
Post back what you find.
