Can anyone recommend a good (hopefully, free) general diagnostic
software? This would not be used (or installed) over a LAN.
It is basically to be used for home user and small businesses.
I have been reading about FixIt from Avanquest but the reviews seem to
be mixed.
Thank you in advance.

To diagnose what exactly?

My immediate need is to diagnose a PC with constant reboots.
I have spent countless hours researching the issue and recommendations
include motherboard, RAM, hard drive, etc.
I need software to burn-in the components.

The best tool to figure out constant reboots is more or less built
into windows. It's a crash dump. Burning in components is done on new
hardware. Is this all brand new hardware?

For memory testing, you should use MemTest 2.11
http://www.memtest.org. It's free and you can boot it from a burnable
ISO.

Have you made sure common things like firmware and BIOS are fully up
to date?

I used MemTest86+ and there were no issues.
No, I have not checked the firmware or BIOS yet.

However, I am also looking beyond this specific issue and trying to
build up my 'toolkit'.
I think I need s/w that will perform a 'quick' pass (10-15 minutes) of
all the components or that will test one, several or all components
for a certain amount of time or passes.
Is there any software that you can personally recommend?

A failing power supply is the likeliest cause of constant reboots.
Speciality PC stores can help you, i.e. can test the PSU and
replace it for you (it takes less than 5 min.) and if you are
lucky may have diagnostics that test other components (free
at Bloom Micro-Tech, one of the last surviving speciality
shops in Ottawa, Canada.)
