Hardware detection

How can I erase all knowledge of both SCSI and IDE CD/DVD-ROMs and
Writers to give the hardware detection a clean slate to work from?

Just deleting them all in Device Manager doesn't seem to fix things.

You have to delete them all in Safe Mode.
