I just purchased three items. One, a 7200 rpm laptop hardrive. Two, a new
laptop with windows vista home. Three, vista ultimate. I would like to take
the hardrive out of the new laptop and install it in a different laptop, then
rebulid the new laptop with vista ultimate with the 7200 rpm hardrive. Will
I receive errors if I take the old hardrive out of the new laptop and put it
in the old laptop?

Yes, there is a good chance that you will get some errors when you put the
old hardrive in the other laptop. The drivers are set for the hardware in
the laptop and so if the laptop it is going into doesn't have the same
hardware there might be a bit of a problem at first.

However, it isn't necessarily going to be a "show stopper." You will
probably have to uninstall some things and install new drivers for various
items. Of course the cleanest way would be to reformat the hard drive and
reinstall Windows after putting it in the other laptop.

Windows Vista on a laptop is probably licensed for that laptop
only. Normally tied to a BIOS identifier, so it can be used on
any IDENTICAL laptop, but can't be used with any other motherboard.

So if you take the Vista Home hard drive out of the Vista Home
laptop, you can put it in the Old laptop, but you won't have Vista
Home any more.

That's not true. The operating system is ONLY tied to a certain system IF it
is OEM software. If it isn't then it can be used on any system. The
identifiers normally are a make up of SEVERAL hardware pieces, not just the
motherboard. If you have non-OEM software then you can transfer it to
another computer legally as long as you remove it from the other computer.
And, in this case it would obviously be removed from the other computer as it
will be on another computer completely.

If necessary the activation, if required, could be done via telephone if
that was even necessary. And, the reason I know this is that I had to do
that with a desktop system of mine before.
