Harddisk enclosure undetectable

Using a no-brand firewire card (NEC chipset), Enclosure Zoom Extreme ZX-8
occasionally cannot be detected. However, attaching it to a USB interfaced
poses no problem. Any help?

WINXP Pro SP2
1GB DDR PC-2700 ram
MSI KT4V Motherboard
 
As I mention on initial posting that the enclosure cannot be DETECTED
occassionally, is it possible to update the firmware via usb connection?
