USB external drive (enclosure)

I have a Metal Gear Box drive enclosure (USB2) that I use just fine.
Recently, I bought another one that looks the same on the outside, but
the circuit board is totally different (appears to be two different
companies).

My WinXP Pro SP2 system doesn't recognize the new enclosure at all, no
'new hardware detected' bubble pops up. I then borrowed a different
brand USB enclosure from work, and had the exact same issue.

Neither new enclosures show up in Disk Management. At work, I can use
all three just fine on a WinXP Pro SP2 box.

Tried using Device Manager to remove (uninstall) the USB entries, but
system still won't recognize the other enclosures.

Tried Update Drivers for for the USB entries under the USB section of
Device Manager, but none new found.

Have not yet tried having working enclosure connected, then trying to
update its driver in Device Manager.

I'm sure a fresh install of Windows would fix it, I really don't want
to reinstall all my software etc just to fix this USB drive issue. It
somehow should be fixable without a reinstall.

I think I even tried setting the drive in the enclosure from Cable
Select to Master, no luck.

Most annoying.

Have you tried to connect the new enclosures while the first one was already
connected? You could be having a USB power issue, if all three of the
enclosures are all requiring the same amount of USP power. You could/should
try a powered USB hub.

I recently bought two identical such enclosures. One worked fine,
the other showed up as a USB device but did not show the disk
itself (even when using the disk from the first device). I tried it
on several PCs - no joy, then asked the dealer for a replacement.
Problem solved.

The enclosures have their own power supplies, and I'm not using a USB
hub at all.

I have not tried to connect one while the first was already connected.
