HARD FREEZE DURING HEAVY PROCESSING

My computer worked OK for 3 years, but 6 weeks ago it started freezing about
10 or 15 minutes after starting very heavy processing. The 3 processor hogs
that make it freeze are: 1) An interactive development environment for a
legacy programming language, 2) running computer based training DVD's, and 3)
during large database updates that are running an application written in .NET
(this is 3rd party software used by tens of thousands of people in the USA).

After turning the computer off, then booting back up, the PC can work fine
for many days until I do 1 of the above things too long. In other words, I
can even get in and out of them for short periods with no problem.

I installed an XP update last week that was supposed to help certain kinds
of freezes, but that didn't fix the problem. Does anyone have any tips about
what I could do or check on my system. I'm an Application Programmer, so you
can talk technical with me. But I am not a Windows System Engineer.

Thanks,

Richard

Have you tried using a program like Speedfan to monitor the temperatures
and voltages while running these jobs? Maybe the CPU is overheating due
to a problem with the fan or the heatsink being clogged. Also the power
supply may be failing and it is only noticeable under load.
