hard drive

i recently purchased a new hard drive, and copied all my music etc onto it
without problem as i wanted to format my other one. i formatted my other one
and did a clean install of windows but my other hard drive is not being
detected. It shows up in bios but not my computer, device manager , disk
mangement or any where else.

I REALLY dont want to format it as i copied around 150gig of stuff on there
to keep it safe.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Have you set the jumpers on the HDD to the correct position relative to the
position in you PC? ie, primary slave, secondary master etc...?

You didn't specify if they are Serial (SATA) or Parallel ATA (PATA) drives
and the manufacture/model and size.
That said if they are PATA drives, the drive that you installed Windows on
should have the jumper set to Master and connected to the end of the ribbon
cable. The second drive, if it is the same manufacture as the Master then
set the jumper on this drive as Slave.
If the second drive is of a different manufacture and the jumper when set to
slave does not resolve the issue then try setting the jumper to CS (Cable
Select).

SATA drives, check you BIOS settings.

The original drive is a Maxtor diamond 250gig and the new one a western
digital caviller 350 gig, they are both PATA drives. I did not think i needed
to change the jumper settings as before i formatted windows they wre both
detected fine., so i just left them. The Maxtor is my primary and this is
being recognised in bios and the WD is my slave and this is also being
recognised,it s just windows that wont find it although it did last time and
nothing has changed?

Chris:
We'll assume that both drives are non-defective and are properly connected &
configured. We'll further assume that your boot HDD - the Maxtor - boots
without incident and functions without any problems.

If these assumptions are correct...

If you haven't already tried this, do so now...

Disconnect your secondary HDD - the WD - and boot only with your boot drive
connected. Shut down the machine and reconnect the WD. Make absolutely sure
you've properly connected & configured (jumpered) that drive. Then boot
again with both drives connected.

Hopefully, that secondary HDD will be recognized by the system. If not,
access Disk Management again and see if the drive is listed without a drive
letter assignment and if possible, assign one.

If still no go, shut down the machine and reconnect that secondary HDD to
another IDE channel - either as Master or Slave - jumper it correctly and
try again.

If still no go, download the WD HDD diagnostic utility and check out the
disk.

I've had problems with this combination of manufacturers in the past. One
trick that worked for me was to remove the jumper entirely (no jumper
installed) on the second drive, then what you would normally think of as the
slave or second drive worked fine.

The 2nd drive is a WD and you cannot remove all the jumpers, it needs to be
jumpered as cable select or dual slave.
