Hard Drive

Hi,
While booting my Win XP Pro computer it pauses and ask if I want to boot
normally, Last known good and several other options, if I select any of the
options it will start to boot and go to the blue screen and start the process
over again. The blue screen flashes to fast for me to get a stop error code.
This hard drive has 2 partitions C: where XP is installed and D: where all
the programs, mydoc, etc are installed. If I move the HD to another computer
I can access some of the files but not the important ones such as my
documents and others that are specific to that profile. The question here is
can I just format partition C and re-install XP in order to make this drive
operational again and have access to my files? Or what can I do to gain
access to my files on that machine? Prcessor is AMD 2800 and two memory
sticks of 512DDr 400

Please help...TIA

I followed the steps for the non-boot option but once in the recovery mode it
never ask for a password so every function comes back as access denied. Am I
missing something here?

TIA

Read the reference that Cari gave you again. You are in the wrong "Repair"
section - the first one. For a repair install, you want the second one that
appears later in the setup process.

Tried the second option and while I am able to get to the C:\ prompt when I
run the commands as instructed I either get access denied (when creating md
tmp) or error due to corrupt file system (when running bootcfg /rebuild)

I am all out of ideas but wide open to suggestions.

Thanks

You should never see a C: prompt if you are doing a Repair Installation.

Boot with the XP CD in the optical drive. When you see the message Press A
Key to Boot From CD... press a key on the keyboard, any key will do, even
the space bar.

Ignore the F2 comment for the Recovery Console, and go through the screens
until you accept the F8 (EULA)... you will then get the option for a REPAIR
INSTALLATION of Windows.

You are currently in the Recovery Console... which is something very
different.

Cari,

I followed the steps, accepted the EULA but I am not getting the repair
option, is there another way out?

Thanks in advance.
