Hard Drive runs constantly

John

Running WinXP, HARD DRIVE has begun running constantly
and HARD DRIVE ACTIVITY LIGHT burning constantly while
the computer is not in use! If I move the mouse, the
activity described above will cease for about 2-3
minutes, then begin again.

Using Msconfig utility, I identified culprit INDEXING
SERVICES under the Services tab. I unchecked it and the
problem stopped!

What do I do now? I am running in Selective Startup for
the time being.

Can anyone help?
Thanks, John :]

For one thing, you're not supposed to use MSCONFIG for configuration of
services. Use Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services, and double
click on Indexing and on the startup type choose disabled, apply, then stop
the service (stop button). It will be permanently (until you change it)
disabled, and the computer will run faster.

Thanks Ken ~ I did what you suggested. Still, I need to
fix the dern thing don't I? The INDEX SERVICE is supposed
to speed up things, I read somewhere. I wonder, could my
Earthlink (ISP) software have done something?
I'll keep working on it! Thanks again! JohnC :]

One more suggestion. Go to your Add and Remove thing in your Control Panel.
Go to your Windows Setup? (third selection down). You will find indexing
service there. Uncheck it and try that out.

Hope this helps.
