Hard Drive problem?

E

effdee

My C: drive lately has occasionally made a clicking sound and them does the
spin up sound, the same sounds as when you turn on the computer.
I've done a scandisk and other checks but no errors are found, but it seems
to me that there must be a problem because it's never done it before.
What could it be? and how do I fix it?

No it doesn't sound like any of those.
It's exactly the same as when you first turn on the computer, a light click
and then the spinning up sound.

Could be such a thing that it's waking up, when you start using your
computer again...

Start | Run <type in> powercfg.cpl <enter>

And see how long it's set before it shuts itself down.

Nope, not that.
It's set to 'never' turn off.
My computer runs 24/7 so all that stuff is set to 'never' turn off or
shutdown.

Hi Penny,

From your description, I think we can find the exact or similar sound in
Windows sound file.

Browse to C:\Windows\Media and try each sound file. Let me know if there
are any result.

Doing a disk backup will never be wrong. For more information abouit
NTBackup

-us/ntbackup_command.mspx?mfr=true>

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Vincent Xu

Then just the basics precautions, don't have anything on that drive
you can't easily replace. Just in case.

A noisy HD can also be a sign that a defrag is in order.
I'd do a defrag with http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html it's
not the easiest way but it's the best (system isn't running)
Just boot it up from your CD.

Backup and replace.

You may also be able to run a diagnostic tool, e.g., Western Digital or
Maxtor, has one. The basically work on all drives I found.
It will tell you.

Event Viewer will also tell you if it finds problems.

When you did the ScanDisk ... did you do Scan for and attempt to fix bad
sectors?

Go to the hard disk manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic
software
respective to your hard disk. After the test, you will know if the hard
disk is bad or
not..

effdee:
Attempting to discern the meaning of out-of-ordinary sounds emanating from
one's HD is more often a useless endeavor. Suffice to say that *any* unusual
clicking-moaning-chattering etc. noises are a cause for concern. It may
signal a failing HD or it may not.

1. At this point you should ensure that you're backing up important/critical
files in a routine & systematic way.

2. And without delay, download a HD diagnostic utility from the manufacturer
of your HD and run it.

I have a 10gig C drive for the system, and keep nothing else goes on it
I keep a spare 10g on stand by which I clone to once a week, so I've removed
the problem drive before it totally fails and put in the clone, and I'm back
in business in only a few minutes.
Now I'll get another 10gig spare, and keep the problem drive as an emergency
last resort until then.
But I'm someone who likes to know what actually is the problem with the old
drive, even though it doesn't really matter anymore.
