No it isn't. It is good to have partitions large enough for your
purposes, but separate partitions can avoid mixing your
executables with your data. That allows you to back them up
separately, and have confidence that complete partitions will not
change.
When the disk fails you can then reinstall the system on the new
drive, and all you will have to recover from the backups is your
own data.
Unfortunately the braindead MS file systems don't merge various
partitions and disks adequately at the file level, so you have to
be conscious of which drive/partition you are using. Linux does
better.
