Hard drive motor drags

On boot up and shut down my hard drive motor slows to a crawl. The head is
still reading, but it could take ten minutes to shut down or twenty to boot.
It drags when it starts to load the menu screen prompting me to click on my
personal user profile to enter Windows. And I'm noticing it only really
seems to drag when the blue screens are showing on startup or shutdown.

As of recent I have to start the computer as I nomally do, wait for the blue
screen to start loading, then cut the power to the system and reboot
selecting the Start Windows Normally option just after POST. From then on
out it will boot normally.

I have installed SP2 and can't think of any outstanding recent events that
might have caused this problem.

Time for a defrag or scandisk?

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web
site and run it to check the drive.
