Hard Drive Issues

Guess

I'm having some hard drive issues and I'm hoping someone can help me resolve
them.

First, looking through the event viewer (Windows XP Pro), I've noticed NTFS
errors for delayed write failures and Disk errors for hard drive controller
errors (errors at the end of this post). Are these errors a sign that my
hard drive is dying? The NTFS errors began appearing after defragging my
hard drive with Raxco's PerfectDisk. The Disk errors have appeared ever
since I rebuilt my hard drive and may have existed before, but I never
looked for the error.

Second, and maybe related, I can't disable the paging file on my computer.
I currently have a static paging file of 1024MB. The paging file still
exists even if I select the "No paging file" radio button and reboot my
computer.

Third, and again maybe related to my first question, I can't get Chkdsk to
run with the /R option.

Hardware and Software Environment:
Dell Inspiron 8100 notebook
Intel P3 1.13ghz processor
512mb ram
Hitachi DK23CA-30 30GB hard drive
Windows XP Pro SP2 (NTFS file format used)
Symantec Norton GoBack v4.00.29
Raxco PerfectDisk v7.0 Build 34
ZoneAlarm Pro v5.5.094
MemTurbo 3

Chkdsk with the R option will only run when you turn off and then restart
your computer, not if you restart Windows.

I will just toss a couple of ideas your way.
1. Run a OS independant drive stress test. It may be a hardware failure.
Sounds like there is an issue with the onboard Cache, as that is the
common issue with write delay errors, or possibly a failed cable/
controller.
2. Check the connections. I know laptops are a pain, but it should be
done. Once the chassis is apart, they are all (for the most part) very
modular. If you are not comfortable doing it, take it to a shop.
3. Have a shop look at it. Most should be able to diagnose the issue
relatively quickly, and the price of new HDD for laptps is coming down
quite a bit.

Wheaty.
