Hard Drive fires up without reason

The hard drive in my Dell Inspiron 8200 (Windows XP Home) fires up when
nothing is running. It then runs for ages (sounds like its doing a defrag)
and my laptop basically won't respond until the hard drive stops. I cannot
find anything that is causing this. Dell have been unable to help. Can
anybody advise what is causing this so that I can put a stop to it. Thanks
