Hard Drive error

My system has:
IDE1=(Master)Western Digital 80Gb Disk Drive
(Slave)Artec DVD-ROM
IDE2=(Master)Western Digital 160Gb Disk Drive
(Slave)Sony DVD Dru-500AX

2.4GHz Pentium 4
512 DDR SDRAM

Windows XP has all patches installed.

I installed a 160Gb disk drive 3 or 4 months ago. It worked OK until a
couple of weeks ago. It would then "disappear" from the tree in Windows
Explorer. As time passed I started getting error while writing to it. It
also "clicked" unless I turned off the computer and let it cool down.
I contacted Western Digital and they sent me a new Disk drive. When I
started the installation, it let me partition the drive and check it for
errors. When windows started the actual installation of the drivers, I got
a error message: "There was a problem installing this hardware:
WDCWD1600JB-00DUA3 An error occurred during the installation of the device
The specified service does not exist as an installed service."
I can see the drive in Windows Explorer. I have temperaly moved my 80Gb
drive to IDE2 just to prove IDE2 OK. I checked the voltage output at the
new drive and I got 12volts and 5volts. I guess I could have another bad
drive, but I was tring to rule out every thing that I could. If more
information is needed, I will be glad to send it. Thank You

If your bios recognizes the hard drive and you could partition it I appears
to be more a software than a hardware problem. Do you have the intel
accelerator installed on your computer. If so you need to disable it so the
hard disk can be recognized properly.

I don't think that I have an Intel Accelerator on this computer, but it
really is weird how I was able to split the drive into 2 partitions. Then
when I was making a backup of my original drive to 1 of my new partitions,
it quit. I suppose that would be when it would have been under the most
stress.

Do you have a smart drive where you can use software to monitor the
temperature of your drive. Maybe you have a circulation problem and that is
why you have hard drive problems.
I had two drives fail on me and when I finally started monitoring
temperatures I noticed that the hard drive was getting up to 150 deg F. I
changed locations of the hard drive and the temperature went down to 115 deg
F.
Try taking the side of the computer and blowing air over the hard drives via
a room fan and see if the hard drive works so that you can do an entire
backup.

OK. I just finished a complete backup from my original drive to the one
that has been giving trouble. I did this while holding my vacuum cleaner
hose next to the drive for extra cooling. It Backed Up OK. Can I find
longer Ribbon cables, to separate the drives and allow more airflow? Every
time I reboot, the drive try's to install, but gets an error. The error
message says something like "The drive can't install because syntax for a
file name, a directory name, or a volume name is wrong." The exact wording
may not be exactly right, because I am writing this from memory. I checked
those names and made sure they are under 8 characters long and no non letter
or number characters except a space.(I think there used to be a limit like
that) Thanks a lot for your help. Do you have any more suggestions?

After much trouble, I think that I have been able to correct the problem.
The way I finally found a solution to the problem was through Microsoft
Knowledge Base. I got a error code 28 and looked that up and it told me to
make some Registry changes. Everything is working now. Thank You for the
help.
