2 DVD drive's config

Hi,

I'm experiencing a few problems with mysetup i'm hoping someone could
point me in the right direction....

previous config:

IDE1 - HDD
IDE2 - DVDRW + DVD

A while back my cdrw drive gave up the ghost so i purchased a sony
dvdrw drive and replaced it in my system with a straight swop. However
when windows loaded and I looked at the my computer I could see the
drive and configure its properties, but when i loaded a cd or dvd it
wouldn't read it.
Eventually I changed the ide cable to an 80wire one that totally fixed
the problem.
However on recent spending spree i decided to replace the dvd reader
with another writer (same brand, only slightly different model) so that
I could read dvdr's. thus giving

IDE1 -HDD (master)
IDE2 -DVDRW(master) + new DVDRW(slave)

Unfortunately i'm getting the same problem the pc is able to see the
drive but won't read/cant read from it.

Has anyone came accross the same problem before? Can anyone suggest
anything that may help?

Thanks

Ryan

Hi,

Unfortunately the support article doesn't have anything that fits the
bill on this one:(

If i put any cd or dvd into the drive the os isnt seeing its content in
the my computer window, its asking me to insert a disk into the drive.
Its as if the computer knows the drive there but can't get data from
it.
Config seems ok, one master one slave.
I can see the drives in the bios and in the my computer.
There are no errors in the device manager.

The strange thing about this problem is that the other drive is been
read perfectly yet its on the same cable. its as if the pc has
designated that the cable will only carry data from the master drive.
I would have thought that two dvdrw's would have less resource
requirement than two hdd's would have?

thanks

Ryan:
Assuming your optical drives and their IDE signal cable are non-defective
and that you've correctly connected & jumpered those drives -- access Disk
Management (Start > right-click My Computer > Manage > Computer Management >
Disk Management) and see if the drive(s) are listed, but do not have a drive
letter assigned. If that's the case, assign a drive letter.

If still no go, try connecting the problem drive on your Primary IDE
channel. Does that correct the problem?

Make sure the HD on the primary IDE channel is indeed set to master and not
CS for computer select.. If it is set to CS, then You might try setting both
optical drives to CS as well.. The new drive(s) should have a new data cable
included in the retail box, it should be used if possible.. The blue
connector is connected to the mobo, the middle connector to the slave, with
first connector rights going to the master..
I assume in device manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, secondary IDE
channel, properties, Advanced settings, both are using UDMA mode 2, right..?
I also will assume that the drives seen in the BIOS are set to auto config..

In My computer window, right click the Icon for the drive, properties, do
you see a recording tab, for each optical recorder drive selected..? The
enable cd recording on this drive box should be unchecked.. Type services.msc
in the run box and set the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service to manual or disable,
mine is set to manual..
This will just affectively turn off the inbuilt XP CD burning capabilities
and has no effect on third party burning apps what so ever..
I use Nero burning software that adds additional software drivers for the
DVD burner I have, do you have burning software installed..?

Check the second IDE channel properties and make sure that the new drive
is not in PIO mode. DVD drives reqire DMA mode in order to function
correctly.

You can certainly have two DVD drives on one IDE cable. Providing the
jumpers are correct, there shouldn't be any problem. I have 3 hard drives
and one DVD burner. Hubby's PC has 1 hard drive, 1 CD burner, 1 DVD Rom and
1 DVD burner. He has to put up with my cast offs but I'm getting him a new
Lightscribe mode so I can replace two of the optical drives. The other one
I'll keep on there as a multi region drive.

Are you 100% sure that the second drive (that can't seem to read disks) is
working correctly?
