Hard Drive error

Harish

Hi,

I have 4.5 GB of data on my laptop hard disk and when I copy this data
to my 250 GB hard drive, it says that there is no space even though
there is lots of space. What is the cause of this error? Please
advise. Thanks

Please provide more information to help others help you.
Is the 250 GB drive new or is it a drive that's been in use for awhile?
If it's new did you format it?
Is it an external or internal drive?

If its been in use for some time, what's reported for the used/free space?

Is the target drive formatted FAT32? The filesize limit for FAT32 is 4GB.
If so, you can convert the drive to NTFS by opening a command window and
entering the command

convert [drive letter]: /fs:ntfs

250 GB is an external hard drive and i have used it for a while. The
hard drive size is 232 GB out of which 23 GB of data is on it. I don't
know why i cant copy a 4.5 GB of data directly to this external hard
drive?

Colin, I dont understand what you are talking about. If you can
explain how i can transfer a 4.5 GB to this external hard drive, that
would be gr8. Thanks

The data must be in a file size of less than 4 GB if the file system on
the drive is FAT32. copy smaller files, OR change the file system of the
drive to NTFS.

Are you getting an error similar to "drive is full or Insufficient Disk Space"? If
you are, as Colin asked, is the drive formatted as FAT32 or NTFS? Also as Colin
stated, if it is FAT32 you are limited to 4GB max copying over any file(s). If you
are copying many files, only select enough files at a time to copy that will keep it
under the 4GB limit. If it's one large file you can try using a compression
application to bring the file down to size, keep in mind that there are certain files
that won't compress any smaller than they are that will make a difference. If that's
the case then the only other way would be to split the file or convert the drive to
NTFS.

If you choose to convert the drive to NTFS, Backup Any/All data that's on the drive
and you don't wish to lose in the event something goes wrong. For info see on
converting see: http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.htm

Is this 4.5GB a single file? And is the 250GB drive FAT32?

If so, be aware that FAT32 has a limit of 4GB for a single file.
Unfortunately, when you try to create a larger file on a FAT32 volume
you get that extremely misleading message.
