Half my hard drive disappeared while installing XP

I started installing Windows XP last night. I let the installer
format my new 250 GB hard drive overnight. In the morning I find it
is installing and has had an error copying some file. I tell it to
continue anyway and when it finishes, it restarts and tells me it
can't boot from the hard disk. I decide to reboot from the CD and
install again but now it says my hard drive is only 131 GB (down from
233 GB binary). Anyone know where all that space went? Thanks.

What version of XP are you running, the original release? If so, this is a
limitation of XP. SP1 corrects this, but you will need to use a 3rd party
partition management tool such as BootIt Next Generation, Partition Magic or
similar to resize the partition after SP1 is installed.

Yes, I am using a very old XP disk. I used BootIt NG and got the
space back. Thanks much!

You should look into slipstreaming your XP CD, to prevent this from
happening in the future - also, it will speed up the process of bringing a
new install up to date, as SP2 will already be installed. Google
"slipstream XP" and "autostreamer", and download the entire SP2 file.
