Interesting... I avoided SMR intentionally when buying NAS drives. I've just checked mine (WD30EFRX) and I'm lucky and on CMR.

I almost bought cheap "shucked" drives (i.e. those super cheap 6TB USB drives), but avoided it for the reliability issues people started to have. It looked like 5 years ago it was possible to get rebadged NAS level drives, but they switched to cheap SMR a while back.

Those SMR timings are awful in those FreeNAS benchmarks!

Yea I had to go and look in my wish list on Amazon to check which drives I had in there as well.

They were all SMR. Removed em. I know I wont be using them in a critical environment but I'm not taking chance. After all not really any price difference :)
