Hard Drive Disc Readers

Hi All,
About two years ago I had a hard drive go belly up on me. The stepper
motor was the problem. The disc inside the hard drive was OK. My IT,
at that time, told me that in about two years there would be a prouct
on the market that anyone could buy that could read the disc from the
hard drive. That disc could be removed and placed in the prouct and
the infomation extracted. I haven't see anything like this being
offered for sale as of yet. Has anyone else? Does anyine know of this
product being offered in the future?

Unlikely. More likely to be what drives it.

for about 15 years now, when a large drive was 64 Megabytes. I
doubt anyone is worrying about data recovery from anything that
old. There simply is no money in it.

Do you mean a device that would clean off the drive exterior, remove
the lid, move the head assembly clear of the platters unbolt the
platter stack, remove the platters, and read them with its own set of
heads? Sounds simple, and I've seen them in some vending machines.
They cost more than the Snickers bars but not as much as the sports
drinks.

Probably the controller, fixed by PCB swap if not direct
discrete component replacement... if it's worth the bother
at all which it might not be else there'd have been backups
made.

Was he smoking crack at the time?

No, unless he means an extremely expensive product bought by
forensics labs. You're free to go looking for one if you
like, I'd imagine it will cost a few tens of thousand$ and
may require a clean room, supplimentary equipment, and
training.

Extremely unlikely, there are far too many details involved
even in the basic extraction and mounting of the platters in
such a device for it to be feasible.

They are still used for the main rotation motor if you arent
obsessively anal about the description of the rotation motor.

He's unlikely to be talking about what is used for head movement.

Much more likely he was just a bit loose with the terminology.

Be not so sure. The data can be worth far more than the medium it's
stored on.

Yep, pro recovery can likely get it back.
