hard drive activity

I never really noticed the activity on my Hard Drive until I starting
playing Online Multiplayer games. The hard drive activity interferes with
timely mouse clicking when interacting with other players. How do I find
what is causing this hard drive activity? I know I do not have viruses'
worms or spyware because my Anti-virus is update up-to-date and I use
adware. It is almost as if there is a Microsoft program intermittently
writing to or reading from my hard drive? How does one get their hard drive
to be "quiet"?

Have a look in control panel and see if "Fastfind" is present. If it is,
double click it, delete any index's showing in the pane and choose "Close
and Stop..." on a drop down menu , in there somewhere.

Hi,

Could be your antivirus software.
Could be the program itself writing changes.
Could be the indexing service.
Could be some other software (Microsoft or not).

Hit Ctrl+shift+escape, kill other applications and unneeded processes (I
would suggest that you do not disable AV, as these games open your system to
other users who may not be there for the same kind of fun as you are). For
the indexing service, if this is a new installation, you may want to disable
it while playing on the properties of the hard drive.

Or it could be something as simple as a machine having insufficient memory
for the task(s) it is doing causing frequent access to the swap file.

512mb RAM. I think what I would like to learn is what background
applications in Windows XP Home are "not" necessary. Then I can disable
them and the activity on the hard drive would not interfere with precision
game playing. btw it's Links 2003 Golf. The swing in the game is a
circular meter. Distance and accuracy are all dependent upon accurate mouse
clicks. When the activity on the Hard Drive kicks in, it can cause the
meter to "stutter".

As far as Windows is concerned, they are *all* not necessary. The
only question is which of them do *you* find valuable enough to
run, despite the performance impact it has on your system.
