Hard Disk Problems after installing Update 816093

I have a four month old compaq presario running XP. I had installed
all windows updates but two, one of which was 816093. Last weekend, I
finally downloaded and installed this update. After rebooting, my
computer hung just after start up and then I got a BSOD indicating a
hard disk error. When I tried to reboot, my hard drive could not be
located. I tried everything I could think of to no avail. Since my
computer is under warrenty, I took it to where I bought it, and when
they turned it on, it booted. They said that the problem was probably
due to the update's not installing properly, but they said to watch
for further problems.

When I got home, I tried to reboot again. The same thing happened. I
finally went to the library, got a book, and hit F8 on loading. I
chose "last know good cofigeration" and got into windows where I
performed system restore to get rid of the update. My computer seems
to be running fine now.

To anyone out there, could the update have caused the problem or is
this a sign my hard drive will fail at any minute? According to the
system tools, the disk is healthy and it defragmented correctly. I
also checked for viruses and found none.

Help and thanks!

Hi Lana,

First off, your hard drive will not "fail any minute".

The error indicates either that the update was not compatible with your
system, or that it was possibly corrupt. I would run chkdsk <drive>: /r just
to be safe, but otherwise, I'd think you are probably in fine shape.

If you try to install the update again, does the same thing happen?

It's not necessarily a sign the drive is pooping out.
Many users experience similar problems when installing MS updates,
not this one in particular. Take a look in the event viewer for a
possible log of events:
eventvwr.msc from the RUN box....

Thank you both for your advice. I'm running checkdisk on my desktop
now. No, I haven't tried reinstalling the update. If I'm feeling brave
later, maybe I'll try again.
