I am attempting to make my new hard drive replace my old
hard drive by copying the old to the new. That is I want
everything to operate the same without all the mess of
reloading programs, profiles, etc. I am not sure if this
can be accomplished. Perhaps by creating a disk image or
some sort of disk copy.

Can anyone help?

you'll need to do an image, as you mention.
Most harddrives provide a utility to do this.

Most drive makers have a free utility to make the transfer
on their web site.
