hangs up when scanning occurs

Due improper shutdown my xp crashed. it hangs up on booting. it will show the message that it is scanning the disk. at 14% it sops responding. i tried to boot in command mod, it also failed. (the system has no cd drive so upgrade is also not possible! ) what should i do?
 
sounds to me like you have had an head crash on your hard
drive. The computer will try to fix the problems at boot
up and if unable to will fail and crash. Scandisk will
try to run and fix your problems until you give up - a
new hard drive may be indicated.
