Hangs at Startup 2000 Logo Screen - SOS!

In the boot up process, the screen freezes at the Windows 2000 Logo
Startup Screen, at the bottom is the "Starting Up" progress indicator
completely filled, then just hangs at this point.

I've tried all the F8 Advanced Troubleshooting Options i.e.
Safe Mode, Last Known Good Config, etc., but
stops at the exact same point every time.
Any other options left at this point since I don't appear to have the
option to reinstall Win2000?

Grateful for any advice!

Looks like not to be solved easily. It sounds like all boot drivers are
started and loaded and SMSS is about to start, or SMSS is about to start
Winlogon, or autocheck, or somwthing else...
Did you update a driver that is loaded in all configurations (like a RAID
controller)?

or:
Are you familiar with WinDBG?

Sorry, as a lay woman, I don't even understand your questions
(how embarrassing). Guess I'm looking for simply instructions to
boot up.

w2k can take minutes to get past that point, trying to load up things.
How long have you waited?

And: ..

has something been changed lately, like a new scanner, camera, something...
Or did Windows or other program say/ask something about installing some
software?

I can only tell you what I did immediately before this happened -
tried to install microsoft's critical updates which apparently failed,
then the pc froze (which had been recurring lately) and therefore, had
to reboot and now I simply can't get back in! ugh!

Thanks again!

At this stage I recommend that you install Win2000 over the
top of the existing installation, to preserve the current settings.
I'm aware of you writing that re-installation is not an option.
If it really is not then you may be stuck with an inoperative
PC.

Or:

Repair from the CD, but that will ask you "difficult questions". I think the
suggestion from Pegasus is the easiest and quickets option.
