Windows 2000 boot problem

A few weeks ago I upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. Its been running
with no problems. I even rebooted several times over the past few weeks
since the upgrade. I've been out of town for 10 days and turned the computer
off before I left. Now it won't boot up. After turning it on, I get the
Dell logo for a few seconds, then the "Starting Windows" indication at the
bottom of a black screen with the progress bar. Then I get the Windows 2000
Professional logo page with the "Starting up..." indicated with a progress
bar. It goes half-way and stops. Nothing happens after that.

Anybody have a solution. You can also email me at (e-mail address removed).
Thanks.

Did you install any updates/hotfixes, or make any other software or OS
configuration changes immediately before shutting down the system?

No. Since my first post, I tried to start in safe mode, but just get a long
list of things. I tried to start with "Last Best Configuration", and get
stuck at the same spot.
