hair-pulling, teeth-gnashing Remote Desktop problem

G

glockaroo

I have spent hours searching Groups, the Web, and following
tutorials... sigh! Still no success.

HomeComp (host): WinXP-Pro, SP2, sitting behind LinkSys wireless
router; set up to allow Remote Desktop; Windows Firewall off (relying
on router), port 3389 enabled, users added as Remote Desktop group
members

Laptop (client): Win Vista Business (new Dell machine) running McAfee
internet security suite

goal: use Remote Desktop with Laptop as client and HomeComp as host
when my wife is on the road with Laptop

I got Remote Desktop running on the laptop at home with no problem,
and this was using actual WAN-side IP of HomeComp as the target, not
just internal 192.168 addressing. Worked great.

BUT, when out "on the road" the Laptop can get on free wireless
Internet fine but cannot get Remote Desktop to run. Have tried all
kinds of permutations :(

Curious info: every time my wife tries to run Remote Desktop on the
Laptop from the road, I see the login/logout entries in Event Viewer
here on the HomeComp, and it lists the login attempts as failures due
to "unknown user name or bad password", even though I know it is the
right name/password cuz I can use it to log in locally, and I have
been very careful that my wife is using the right name/password (and
no caps lock).

I swear I have worn out the search buttons trying to do this on my
own, but I am out of ideas. Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Glocka,

You could try and connect using the public IP followed by the
portnumber
***.***.***.***:3389

I have the same problem, adding the port # doesn't help. I get past the logon
screen, but the desktop doesn't come up. Then it disconnects.

Could be Vista's auto-tuning. Check if this helps:
