HaHa lets celebrate Vista sales are well below expectations!! MSFT has failed!!

W

william.hooper

Normally a Microsoft fan, I rushed out and bought two copies of Vista
to upgrade my Laptop and Desktop - and now, after a fight, have
returned them both. Aside from dreadful compatibility problems with
many apps and drivers, Vista is a mass of security warnings, and its
oh so exciting Aero interface is actually ugly. They even increased
the window borders in a pointless waste of screen space just so we
could see how smart the translucent effect is. Oh yea, and if you
don't like grey don't maximize you windows. You can see why they
didn't include a Win XP theme in Vista (only the classic Win 95
theme) - because most people would have ended up using it! Windows
Explorer has been ruined, Internet Explorer has lost its menu bar (by
default) for some silly looking buttons, you can't even view a .jpg
without childish oversized toolbars at top and bottom complete with
laughable button "Make a Video".

The whole Vista project and to some annoying Office 2007 ribbon
suggest a company in crisis. Look at Vista's Windows Explorer and
change the view from details to thumbnails - notice the column titles
remain but loose their meaning - unlike previous versions. The whole
product feels half finished and the famous disciplined attention to
detail that made Microsoft the biggest software company in the world
is gone. Looking at their recent work you can feel the break down of
the management chain, how the developers are having fun with their
geeky half finished touches. I don't know if trying to fix the windows
security model while retaining backward compatibility is sensible, but
the valiant Vista attempt is so unfinished it will only damage
Microsoft's reputation.

Bill Gates you did far more for the world building Microsoft that you
ever will trying to save Africa from Aids. 95% of the world's
computers, 1 billion odd in total, run Windows. No one could ask for a
more important legacy. Get back to work, focus on results, reign in
the geeks, forget the fisher price Apple Mac OS GUI and turn windows
into the most powerful, most efficient, most sophisticated OS in the
world.

Why did I say "HaHa lets celebrate".... Because the failure is so
catastrophic that Microsoft might start soul searching and hiring some
focused management to put the company back on track before its too
late...

Paul Allen, forget piracy, the reason for your slow Vista sales is
that you don't know how to do your job. You rose on Bill's coat tails,
all your investments have been a failure, retire to that big yacht and
let someone else head the company...

I have responded inline to your point below.

Mike Brannigan

Normally a Microsoft fan, I rushed out and bought two copies of Vista
to upgrade my Laptop and Desktop - and now, after a fight, have
returned them both. Aside from dreadful compatibility problems with
many apps and drivers,

Vista is actually extremely compatible with many applications - did you
actually look at using the compatibility mode options for your problematic
apps instead of just saying they are non compatibly after the first install
? (Compatibility settings re all covered in the online help)
Drivers are a known issue and it is incumbent on you to ensure that hardware
you use with an OS has a driver available. This is the responsibility of the
hardware manufacturer not Microsoft and as such with any brand new OS some
manufacturers are up to speed and others are lagging, but ultimately YOU
should have checked for drivers before deciding to move OS.
Vista is a mass of security warnings,

Good !, this makes the OS more secure for end users. Experienced IT users
who understand the risks of their actions etc can disable the warnings if
they wish, and at their own risk. Did you do an research or read about User
Account Control in the online help to understand what it is how it works and
it your are comfortable with increasing your risk exposure you ca turn it
off ? (again in the online help)
and its
oh so exciting Aero interface is actually ugly. They even increased
the window borders in a pointless waste of screen space just so we
could see how smart the translucent effect is.

There is no increase in "boarder" use - unless you mean the Sidebar. Which
can either exist under maximized or other windows or can be turned off (or
left always on top for users with larger desktop real estate such as larger
wide screen monitors)
Oh yea, and if you
don't like grey don't maximize you windows. You can see why they
didn't include a Win XP theme in Vista (only the classic Win 95
theme) - because most people would have ended up using it! Windows
Explorer has been ruined, Internet Explorer has lost its menu bar (by
default) for some silly looking buttons,

So turn it back on - the simplification of the UI is the result of a
massive amount of research that showed that the menu was not as heavily used
by the AVERAGE user, so is just hidden by default as it it's absence does
not prevent you doing normal web browsing operations, but 2 mouse click ad
it is restored.
you can't even view a .jpg
without childish oversized toolbars at top and bottom complete with
laughable button "Make a Video".

So you have JPG by default associated with Windows PhotoViewer - then
associate it with some other application.
Also the button in Photo Viewer are no bigger then other menu bars in
Windows Vista.
The whole Vista project and to some annoying Office 2007 ribbon
suggest a company in crisis. Look at Vista's Windows Explorer and
change the view from details to thumbnails - notice the column titles
remain but loose their meaning - unlike previous versions.

No the column titles are also buttons that sort the icons by the title on
the button, e.g size, name etc.
Press them and the icons reorder in respect of that sort criteria.
The whole
product feels half finished and the famous disciplined attention to
detail that made Microsoft the biggest software company in the world
is gone.

Actually it feels like your use of the product has been superficial and you
have made no attempt to read any help or documentation or even explore the
UI etc (such as your column comment above)
Looking at their recent work you can feel the break down of
the management chain, how the developers are having fun with their
geeky half finished touches. I don't know if trying to fix the windows
security model while retaining backward compatibility is sensible, but
the valiant Vista attempt is so unfinished it will only damage
Microsoft's reputation.

Sorry but I disagree. The security changes are well worth the potential
inconvenience to the experienced user and they may bypass these if they
wish.
If Microsoft did not try so hard to provide backward compatibility people
like you would be the first to cry foul that none of your apps or hardware
now work and you are being forced to upgrade - you really can't have it both
ways.
Bill Gates you did far more for the world building Microsoft that you
ever will trying to save Africa from Aids.

That is an incredibly naive point of view - look more closely at the work
being done by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the potential with
the recent additional massive donations they have received for a real chance
of eliminating some of the worlds biggest killer diseases often prevalent in
the poorest countries.
95% of the world's
computers, 1 billion odd in total, run Windows. No one could ask for a
more important legacy.

Insignificant to curing world wide diseases
Get back to work, focus on results, reign in
the geeks, forget the fisher price Apple Mac OS GUI and turn windows
into the most powerful, most efficient, most sophisticated OS in the
world.

Why did I say "HaHa lets celebrate".... Because the failure is so
catastrophic that Microsoft might start soul searching and hiring some
focused management to put the company back on track before its too
late...

Actually while the sales figures are off initial targets they are hardly
catastrophic, only 4 weeks from public launch.
Paul Allen, forget piracy, the reason for your slow Vista sales is
that you don't know how to do your job. You rose on Bill's coat tails,
all your investments have been a failure, retire to that big yacht and
let someone else head the company...

Petty sniping at people who have had a significant hand in the creation of
the IT world we know and Microsoft as a company does nothing to support your
case here.

GOOD REPLY BUT...

Vista is actually extremely compatible with many applicationThat's not good. Too many warnings and the user switches off. Who are
you kidding?
Put Win XP app and Wero App next to each other on your two laptops.
Now look measure size of top bar that contains application title. Now
measure width of border around sides of app. Who are you kidding?
You didn't read what i wrote. Win XP default theme is not old
fashioned Win95 grey. Its more modern blue and sculpted. You can't
that back on like I said they removed it. Your reading skills are not
up to much or are you so blinded by love for Vista it's temporarily
messed with them.
Err they removed the old WinXP file viewer. You can't copy it back on.
Have a look at the bootom menu bar... is that really the same size? No
they made it extra bid for the VCR control to fasat forward through
you jpgs. Ot maybe they just thought it was cool :)
You are just not trying so neither am I going to

Fine, its a hard call. My point just this is a mess.

Hey if you cure them they will just kill each other anyway. A new OS
for smart people like myself is worth a more than saving a few of
them :)
We will see
I wrote a pretty careful analysis. You have contributed nothing. Sold
my personal MSFT shares after a couple of days with Vista. It was a
tough call and a lot of share, but think I see a company in trouble.

You will also find a few great people (like me)... who have been crying out

ahh well..... I decided that this newsgroup and the people in it are not

Although I would prefer vista to be good...unfortunatly its not... nor can
any service pack save it

It makes you think that Vista is the Windows Me of NT, doesn't it? It's
just a way for MS to rake in more money along with third party software
and hardware vendors.

I totally disagree with you. I have been using Vista since pre beta 2 and I have to say that it has come a long way. I have tested Vista out with some of my family and friends and in the most part, they really enjoy this new version. They comment on the new search built into the start menu and now the new dreamscene feature.

it IS windows ME 2007

Thats what I have been preaching. however windows Me had XP after it
so that big harm was not caused on a global scale.
Vista has nothing after it ... only a promise... and who knows what will
become of that promise?

XP was based on a supurb OS, win2000 and that is what saved MS then. What
will the next OS after vista be based on?
I see nothing in the horizon.. Its getting cloudy at Redmond

W

Well I don't believe all the MSFT people have their brain removed. I
use Lotus Notes at work - it, like most non MSFT GUI applications is
absolutely dreadful. MSFT gets a hard time for security but lets face
it Linux doesn't run apps written years ago and installed and run
today by people like my Mother. Its like comparing mountains and
hills.

My email was basically about what I see as failing at Microsoft maybe
since Bills departure. It's like the developers have been given free
reign and a mandate to turn XP into something warm and cuddly. Gone is
their usual consistency and emphasis on power. Worse the management is
not keeping up with the changes and so half baked and even bad ideas
are coming out. Its just a mess.

Come on someone at MSFT... Tell us truthfully... We know you were the
best once and are still the biggest in the world... Is it going
wrong? ... Is Paul a mess? ... Too much time drinking Crystal on the
boat? .... Tell us the way it is and don't watch you favourite company
go down the drain without a voice...

The two factors that really tarnish the image of Linux is that most who
extol its virtues in these newsgroups have little or no experience with it,
and are only using it because they are freeloaders who do not like to pay
for anything, MS or otherwise, if they can help it..

I have worked on and with Linux installed on PC servers, and know that it is
a very effective server solution.. I have never denied that Linux has a
place in the computing world.. many of the MVPs who do maintenance have a
Knoppix CD or similar which they use to test and overcome problems..

You guys are doing Linux no favors at all.. you quote from others and have
virtually no thoughts of your own, and like John, seem to fall into the use
of profanity very quickly.. you should stand back and take a good look at
what you are doing.. it is not pretty..

Companies fail when they fail to adapt to change. We fail to adapt to
change when our thinking becomes blinkered. Our thinking becomes
blinkered when we are stubborn and emotional. Maybe Microsoft has
turned itself internally into almost a religion, a dynamic emphasised
by the hatred of the anti Microsoft crowd. Conventional religion is
the biggest barrier to free thinking. This might explain how a poor
chap like Mike is misunderstanding so much. Well either that or he is
in a hurry.
