GTA:VC/XP woes.

Let me get system specs out of the way:

P4 2.66ghz
1gb RAM (2x 512mb ddr dimms)
Asus Geforce FX 5200, 128mb, agp8 (latest drivers)
WindowsXP Home (latest patches)
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (latest patches)

Whenever I try to play Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, or VC to save typing,
something goes wonky. It will run, show up in the task bar, but it causes the
screen to go black and then re-minimizes itself. I can get it to work -- and
when it works, it works fine -- but I have to click really quick on the
taskbar. I have to click three or four time and maybe even a left click.
Eventually it'll come up, but it originally ran seamlessly, and this wierd
minimization also affects my There installation.

I tried uninstalling VC, then re-installing it, but it still does not work.
Let me note three things about the uninstall. When I uninstalled it and then
re-installed it: I was not using the latest nVidia drivers, was not using the
VC patch, and my saved games stayed on the system. I bring the saved games up,
because this glitch has only seemed to manifest itself after a friend loaded
some saved VC game he got online. Could this be the glitch?

On a side note, Second Life, a graphics heavy game, works just fine. It
maximizes and runs fullscreen with no problem. In fact, except for VC and
There not going full screen (because they do work after some trippy clicking),
everything else is golden.

It has me rather puzzled, and I would appreciate any suggestions or help. This
is my game machine, so I can re-install it, but I'd really hate to have to do
that. Thanks!

Thanks for the very complete post. I do think your problem has only to
do with VC, since other games and graphics-intensive programs run fine.
It is quite possible that the downloaded saved VC game hosed things.
I'd completely get rid of absolutely everything having to do with the
game, saved games, registry entries, etc. and reinstall it with your
updated video drivers in place. Install any game patches before you
start the game. And then, if you still have problems, contact VC's tech
support.

Good luck,

Malke
