Greyed out Refresh Rate in Properties Display

I have just upgraded to XP Pro with SP2. In he monitor refresh rate in the
Properties box is the line 'Use hardware default setting'. Instead of Plug
and Play I am now told that it is (Default Monitor). Everything is greyed
out so I can no longer chabnge the refresh rate. If I try to move an open
document in the desktop it moves very slowly and jerkily. Any solutions
greatly appreciated

Thanks for the response. I found that I needed to download the AVI AVG1.SYS
file.
Once that was done and windows reinstalled No more greyed out monitor
controls.
Can once again set the refresh to 75. Everything working fine. Happy days
