Graphics card isn't recognised by XP

Help!!

Windows XP Pro SP2 machine that refuses to recognise my graphics card. The
MOBO (biostar M7VIG 400 pro) has on-board video capabilities. I have set the
BIOS to AGP video to allow me to install my NVidia GeForce MX 400 GPU.

XP defaults to a basic 1024x768 screen resolution and under 'display
properties/settings' the GPU isn't listed (it just says 'Display: (default
monitor) on' and the rest is blank) indicating that XP hasn't detected the
GPU.

Checking Device Manager isn't any good. It doesn't even have an entry for
the GPU there either.

I have tried to install the NVidia drivers appropriate for the card but get
an error message saying that the setup routine can't find any hardware that
is supported by this driver package (as confirmed by the GPU not being
recognised anywhere within XP).

I am truly baffled by this, any help would be very much appreciated.

As the PC is booted, do you see the NVidia card flash a message on the
screen?
If not it is most likely a BIOS or hardware problem.
Hardware in question is the MBD and the New video card.
Is the new video card fully seated in the socket?
Does it require an AUX connector? (usually power)
Have you downloaded the latest drivers for the new card, or are you using
those that came on the CD?

so assuming you have the monitor plugged into the new card and XP loads
fine??
the proper procedure for installing a new video card would be to uninstall
the old video drivers under Control Panel/add&remove....then under Device
Manager uninstall the old video card.Reboot and enter the BIOS to disable
the onboard video.....shut down and install the new card.
restart and XP at this point should pick up the new card and display the New
Hardware Wizard.....have your driver CD ready for it to load the drivers
from.
Some mobo not only require you to set the port..but to actually disable
onboard video as well as reduce the amt.of RAM for onboard video to 0

Problem solved..

There was an I/O range conflict with the AGP controller. Uninstalling the
AGP controller and reinstalling through device manager has allowed XP to
correctly detect the GPU now.

Thanks for your advice guys..
