Graph Problems

I have an issue with Graph causing PPT to crash. I get this "GRAPH.exe has
generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the
program. An error log is being created the pres contains open inserted
objects that can't be closed automatically. Close the objects and try again".

This seems to happen when I try to delete a column in the data sheet. I use
the ctrl minus keys to do this. Does not happen on all charts. Also for
some reason in Graph my formatting toolbar is always indented to the right.

Windows 2000, PPT 2002.

Any ideas?

Instead of using Ctrl+minus, does it still crash if you select the column and
hit the Delete key or click the scissors icon on your toolbar?

Thanks for replying Echo,

You know its one of those strange things, It seems to cause the problem when
the chart was created with Excel data copied into the PPT data sheet. I have
tried deleting through the pull downs and using the scissors icon and I get
the same problem. I also notice whern using Excel data sometimes the cell
data headings have to be manually re-keyed in because the PPT data sheet does
not translate correctly (number, date codes). Usually I can fix, but it
costs time. It also seems if you do multiple edits in graph (back in forth
between PPT) it can cause problems, almost like a build-up of using resources
and not getting those resources back.

Ooooh, yeah, copying stuff from Excel to the PPT data sheet can do some
strange things. Nice detective work!

Why not do the charts in Excel and paste those into PPT? The data sheet
comes with, so you can edit in an Excel spreadsheet on the slide instead of
in the PPT graph data sheet.

Hi Echo,

I may start doing through excel itself on some charts. The only issue with
that is formatting always seems to be a challenge. Like getting the chart
size in ppt the way you like, then all of the sudden the chart goes bonkers
and re-sizes itself. I think excel and ppt don't like each other much? One
fix we tried was to create a new chart from scratch then copy in the data
from excel, re-format to our liking, this seems to work.

I enjoy your website, and discussions on PPT! I have been using PPT since
1991 when MS gave you a hardcover user's guide! and I'm still learning new
things.

The default in Excel is to put new charts on the current worksheet.
That leaves them open to random reformatting when the sheet itself changes.

If you're not already doing it, put each chart on a new chart sheet.
