How come some favicons are persistant and some disappear when you dump the cache?

The only way a shortcut icon appears on a user's Favorites menu and Address
bar is if the user chooses to add your page as a favorite.

Yes, I know.

But...what I'm saying is that; some icons always stay on my desktop and some disappear when I dump my cache.

Example, this guy's will stay: http://www.michaelhorowitz.com/removespyware.html
this is not a plug for him just one i grabbed off desktop.

but ones I create tend to disappear when I clear my cache.

I'd like the ones I create to stick around for a while, if possible :-)

tnx,

Rob

Because they are stored in the Cache files. When you delete them the icon goes away.
Sometimes one will persist in the ShellIconCache file and sometimes they won't
Even if it does make it to ShellIconCache it will disappear if not used often, as the ShellIconCache
only keeps the most recently used Icons.

Ok...so how can you make it go there :-) ? is that possible to make it go to the ShellIconCache instead regular cache?

Must be a way ... cause I have sites I haven't visited in almost a year and the icon is still on desktop, and I dump the regular cache every coupla daze.

Like Axialis Software's icon has been staring me in the face since April 04 :-) and haven't been there in months.

I empty the TIF every time I close the browser, however files named
favicon.ico never seem to be deleted. Could it be that the icons that are
disappearing have a different name, and are referenced as a favicon through
a meta tag?

The favicon files are only deleted if you also select the Delete offline content Option
There is a utility that lets you move your favicons out of the TIF periodically (and check your favorites or broken links) named
favorg

No - but if a reference is made in a meta tag, then the icons can have names
or locations other than favicon.ico in the root folder.

Stefan's explanation re offline content is much more plausible than mine,
since I do not delete offline content.
