Google toolbar crashes IE every day

M

Marc

When I used Google Toolbar, my IE 6 would crash at least twice a day. The
error message would pop up asking me if I wanted to send a report to MS,
then all of my open pages would close. I know this is or was a known issue.

I uninstalled the toolbar about 6 months ago and haven't had one crash
since. I really liked the toolbar and would like to go back to it,
especially since they came out with the new http interface, which I don't
care for. Not bitching. Just my opinion.. I've looked all over but can't
find a version history of the toolbar. Has Google fixed this, or at least
upgraded the software lately?

Hi Marc,

Haven't had any problems with it here except for a small anoyance of toolbar
layout hijacking on IE7. Download from toolbar.google.com to ensure that you
use the browser version detection on their site to correctly determine the
latest version of their toolbar to download.

Regards.

Hello,

Start Internet Explorer as normal, Tools, Manage Add-ons, Enable or Disable
Add-ons.

Disable all the add-ons, except for google toolbar, and see if it still
gives problems. If no, one of your add-ons is conflicting with each other.
You will have to enable each add-on one by one till the problem reappears
and you get the culprit.

Have you read the OP's post carefully? He did state the above in his post.

I'm having the hijack problem but with IE 6, set up icons, menus and
address bar on top line, Google on second, lock everything and at
various times everything resets and link, which I don't want reappears.

I've tried the manage add-ons fix, it didn't and tried loading an old
version, which I also prefer but arrogant Google pops up a message that
it's updated the toolbar for me, I don't want it bloody updating, I'm
perverse, I like the old one, bah.

I am saying that there may be a chance of an add-on conflicting with Google
Toolbar and he will need to install it back and do a trial-and-error.

I've had this problem occasionally, but I don't believe it's related to
the Google toolbar. It's certainly not related to updates because I'm
running an older version and have suppressed the updates. My suspicion is
that it results from a defect in IE, which periodically forgets some of
the things it's supposed to remember. It turns out that the toolbar lock
isn't actually much of a lock. It prevents changes through the GUI,
including those you intend to make, but does not restrict changes by
script or thorugh registry modification.

I was able to revert to an older version and prevent automatic updayes bt
restricting access to the folder where the toolbar DLL is stored. You can
do this if you're running Win 2K or XP Pro, but I don't think you can do
it on XP Home.
