I have recently seen that the aerial photo of my area has been updated to one of last year (previously 2002 photo).

Can anyone please tell me what triggers an update of the photos and is there any way to make the photos updated more often?

I don't think you can make Google Earth update your local area any faster - they simply update the imagery when they purchase the new data. You can always try using the aerial photos from maps.live.com and see if they are different (they are more recent than google maps for my area).
