Good wireless signal - but browser cannot find it?

Would it be fair, therefore, to conclude that the problem was caused by a
defective component (the previous wireless card)?

I thank you all again for your help in this matter.

It's difficult to say. Standard (ieee 802.11) networks cards and
routers from different manufacturer's are supposed to work together
seamlessly. I'd test it elsewhere before consigning it to the bin.
