GMail Drive Extensions

B

Bob Adkins

GMail has 1GB of storage, and a nice drive extension can be found here:

http://www.viksoe.dk/gmail/

It allows drag and drop, and "sendto" just like any local drive. Very nice
for redundant backups and "stuff"!

The above program has some fluff that may be spyware. However, the INF file
and DLL file can be ripped and installed separately, avoiding the spyware.
:) (Right click on the INF file and select "Install").

Does anyone know of a cleaner GMail extension, or how to clean up the INF
file in this one?

Thanks,,,

I use Gmail Drive 1.03 downloaded from
http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm and have seen no evidence of spyware
in it, nor do either AdAware or SpyBotS&D detect any spyware in it. I
know of several other people using it who have not found spyware in it,
either.

Be aware that GMail accounts of people who have been known to use 3rd party
apps like this and PGtGM have been suspended / revoked due to non-compliance
with the Service Agreement.

Hmm. Please quote the relevant section of Gmail's service agreement.

GMail Program Policies page
http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/program_policies.html

To uphold the quality and reputation of Google Gmail, your use of Gmail is
subject to these program policies. If you are found to be in violation of
our policies at any time, as determined by Google in its sole discretion, we
may warn you or suspend or terminate your account.

Prohibited Actions

In addition to (and/or as some examples of) the violations described in
Section 3 of the Terms of Use, users may not:

< CONTENT EDITED ! >
a.. Modify, adapt, translate, or reverse engineer any portion of the Gmail
Service
< CONTENT EDITED ! >
======================================
I think this section would be relevant. I have heard of people having lost
access to their GMail accounts because they used 3rd party tools. Just
giving fair warning to the community. I have nothing against the software
creators or their creations.

But what's that have to do with uploading files?

And why would GMail object to a tool that makes their service a lot more
useful? :)

I'm somewhat dubious that the quoted limitations would really apply to
Gmail Drive. And if even if they can reasonably be stretched to cover
it, I haven't heard of anyone experiencing problems from Google over
using it. But then again, maybe someone has and I just haven't heard

I think they could reasonably claim that using the e-mail service as a
remote file system is an 'adaptation' of their service. But Google do
not have to be reasonable or provide any explanations if they decide to
terminate an account; they are free to change their policies at any
time, and determination of violations is entirely at their discretion.
I use Gmail and like it, but I wouldn't trust it with any critical
files or e-mails. IMO anything critical should be kept locally
(perhaps in addition to a copy on the Google servers).

I haven't either. Maybe Sparx can give us links.

I guess I am missing the point here. Why? What would you need this
for? I don't get it.

This is to use your Gmail account as a hard drive.

If you have a REALLY FAST internet connection it's very useful.

It's worth pointing out something here. There will be apps like this that
work (at least temporarily), but Gmail isn't designed for this and Google
is not going to be happy about their email system being used as a generic
file storage system.

If you think this is a good idea for backing up data, you're mistaken
because Google is going to make sure that their system isn't used like this
contrary to their wishes.

Very true. IIRC a fellow posted here recently about having lost his
Gmail account due to using it for file storage. Of course, he also lost
all the files he had stored there as well. I sure wouldn't store
anything there that I wouldn't want to lose.
