Global Template Error

At work I am computer support but for the life of me I cannot remember how to
get rid of this error. The error has the extent of: Failed to make changes to
global template. Select cancel or rename file. It's something to this extent
but since I'm at home I can't write the exact error. It comes up when I close
Word whether be an attachment or opening up a new word document then closing
it. Any thoughts?

Hi Nicole,

Thoughts ...

Someone working computer support should know better than to open attachments
directly.

Normal.dot should not be read-only or shared. Doing either of these could
give you the error you are reporting.

Another source of this problem (I have usually seen it as something to the
effect of Word has made changes to the global template...) may be that there
may be two instances of Word running. I am not sure if it is still the case
with Word 2003 and later but earlier versions would allow you to open Word
twice (or more). Most users would not usually do so deliberately but only
accidentally. But doing so inevitably created some problems, one of which
is the global template gets modified. Depending on how your e-mail is set
up a separate instance of Word may run when you compose e-mail or open
attachments, even if it is not obvious. And if you are using Windows
terminal server you have to be careful which folder you select for storing
your templates. It seems you are only allowed to use the default location,
but you will have a heck of a time figuring that out. Even if you can't
figure out exactly why you are getting the message, the rule for it is
simple: Just say No. If YOU did not make the changes in the global template
yourself, you can be sure you don't what those changes.
