I've been told that the styles within our global template are created on the
fly. Although a style toolbar has been created in the global template when a
style button is clicked the style is being creaed at that point. Does this
make any sense to anyone? I've been told the styles should be stored within
the global template and I thought they were.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?TWlzc1FU?=,

Yes, this makes sense. If by "global template" you mean a template that's loaded
with Word, to supply macros and toolbars, then Word can't access any styles it
contains directly. This is only possible within an individual document. When a
new document is created from a template it will inherit the styles from the
template, but afterwards only those styles are available. So it makes sense that
the global template will create the styles "on-demand" in a document.
