Global setting for 'let Outlook decide best format'?

S

Sandpiper

I need some help with email format settings. I have discovered that if I
open a contact, right click on the email address, select 'outlook
properties.....' and look at internet format, there are three choices:
- send in plain text only
- send in rich text only
- let Outlook decide the best format

I don't recall making these settings previously, but there seems to be no
pattern as to which setting is with each contact. First, if I have set
Outlook to compose in HTML, and if I select 'let Outlook decide the best
format', will emails go out as HTML? Second, is there a way to select 'let
Outlook decide the best format' globally, for all existing contacts and all
future contacts, or must I edit each contact? Thanks.

the global setting for new contacts should be 'let outlook decide'. Let
Outlook decide means if you use RTF format, outlook converts it to HTML or
plain text for internet addresses and leaves it as RTF for local addresses
(usually Exchange server).

If you don;t use exchange or a similar system on your LAN, you'll want to
let outlook decide since only other outlook users can use RTF.

Where do I find this setting (globally)? The only one I've found is
tools/options/mail format tab, and in the message format section, 'compose
in this message format:' offers three choices of HTML, RTF, or plain text.
I've chosen HTML, but that is overridden by the setting in each contact's
sheet. BTW, I'm using only internet email, not Exchange.

If I understand this correctly, this setting simply tells Outlook to use
HTML instead of RTF. What about those contacts who have email type set to
plain text (as selected in contacts page, right click on email address,
outlook properties)? It is this setting in outlook properties that I would
like to change to 'let Outlook decided', but globally, instead of changing
it for each individual contact.

You'll need to change individual records yourself. I don't believe it
exports (so you can change it using Excel) - but you may be able to use VBA.

One of my clients is running into the same problem. I'd like to write
a vba script to correct his address book (which is sizeable), but I'm
having trouble finding the Outlook object to update. Can you direct me
to the place in the Outlook object model where this value is
maintained?
BTW - this value does not export from Outlook.
