Global Catalog Servers

In a single domain forest, I know that Microsoft recommends making all
DCs Global Catalog Servers.

In our network, we have approximately 150 PCs. We have 2 DCs but only
one of them is a GC. Is it a good idea to make the other DC a GC as
well? Our environment is pretty small. Again, 1 forest, 1 domain, 1
IP segment.

Thank you.

Yes, it's safe, and is a good idea to make both DCs GC servers as well.

It is recommended to have at least one GC in each site to cut down on WAN
traffic. I've never heard of a recommendation to make every DC a GC.

I your situation, though, I would make the second DC a GC only for fault
tolerance.

In terms of FSMO functions, should I distribute one or two to the
second DC. Right now, the first DC does everything.

Up to you - which is the most reliable server with the least resource load?

FSMO roles can be moved at any time. "even after the
server that held the role is dead" you can move them if
you like. the only role that you need to be awair of is
the infrastructure master. You do not want the server
that holds the IFM to also be a GC.

that should be the only limitation.

If you advise that a GC should not be made the Infrastructure Master,
then perhaps I should bring another DC online. Since I have only 2
DCs and someone in a previous post recommended making both of the DCs
into GCs, then one of my GCs has to be the Infrastructure Master.

Why do you not recommend that a GC also be the IFM?

In a single forest, single domain there is NO reason not to make the IM a
GC.
