I think I broke it. Here's what I did. I have a Gigabyte 8ik1100.
It was working great but like an idiot I had to upgrade. I was
running a P4 2.53 with 1 gig (2x512) pc2700. No problems. I upgraded
to a P4 3.0c last week no problems. Just got a deal on some Kingston
HyperX pc3200 so I could run the new cpu at fsb 800mhz. Slapped the
new RAM in this morning before work thinking no problem. I didn't
even check to see if it would boot into XP, I went right to the BIOS
and noticed in auto mode the RAM timings weren't detected at what they
were supposed to be (CAS was 2.5 etc...) so I changed them manually to
what the RAM was supposed to be. Thats when the problems started.
I couldn't even get through POST after that. I kept getting constant
quick beeps. I swapped back the old RAM and same thing. I swapped
back old CPU since I know the old RAM and old CPU work together and
then I was able to get a POST and into BIOS and changed everything
back into failsafe. Now here is the really wierd part. My CPU temp
is out of this world. I can go into BIOS and watch under the PC
Health menu as my CPU temp climbs up past 70 degree C. This is
verified by a digital temp readout on the front of the case from a
different sensor (Thermaltake Lanfire case).
It seemed to me this was a voltage issue so I swapped out power
sources and still the same problem. All voltages are set to auto in
Bios. No matter which CPU or RAM I use the temp starts to climb as
soon as I turn on the power. This is with the Thermaltake CPU cooler
running at full speed under zero load. I even tried setting the CPU
voltage very low in BIOS and tried booting from the backup BIOS. I
also reset everything by pulling the batter. I have unhooked all
peripherals. I can get into BIOS with both CPUS and with either set
of RAM. According to BIOS everthing is reading normal. I can't boot
into XP cause my SATA drive is screwed up now too. I have to shut
down after a couple minutes of tinkering and let the CPU cool down or
risk melting it. How the hell did I screw everything up by upgrading
my RAM? Was the Hyperx bad? I feel sick to my stomach cause there
was nothing wrong with it in the first place.
Any ideas, I'm guessing a new motherboard is in order. Will the
hyperx ruin a new one too?
