.gif files

I recently upgraded to XP, I have been doing my regular
windows updates, but I am unable to open .gif files. Is
there a security setting that is disabling the viewing of
these files? Any suggestions or help?
 
In your file options, what is the default program to open that file type? I
found with XP PRO that I had to specify the program.
