Gibberish on some web pages

I just switched from using Netscape to IE6, which is very
good, except for SOME web pages which show gibberish like
foreign languages.

Amazon, for example, works fine, but in some book reviews part of
the page is not legible. Other parts (of the same page) are fine.
One of the newspapers I access is the same: I can read the article
itself, but the headline shows up like Greek.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Make sure you have the latest updates for IE6.

Is auto select on/off?

Which encoding do you use?
Does it clear when you try an other one.

The source code may help you identify the one they used (coded in).

There is an option not to use the web-page encoding, but to let Windows
use its own encoding. Once I checked that option, the problem cleared up.
